Insecurity in Haiti: a worrying business

In a context where insecurity is a daily reality for Haitians, Sauveur Pierre Étienne’s words, expressed during his appearance on Louko Désir’s Matin Débat program, sound like an alarm bell.

Far from being simply a societal or political problem, it seems that insecurity has turned into a real business, generating profits for some at the expense of the majority.

This assertion raises many questions. How did we get to the point where violence and fear have become tools of profit?

The armed gangs that proliferate in the streets not only act out of necessity, but are often supported by a system that takes advantage of the chaos. This calls into question not only the institutions of the State, but also the collective responsibility of Haitian society.

It’s crucial to ask who really benefits from this situation.

Entrepreneurs of fear, often invisible, seem to thrive in a climate of instability.

We need to be aware of this perverse dynamic and act accordingly.

The fight against insecurity must not only be a question of repression, but also of prevention and restoring trust between the State and its citizens.

It is imperative to rebuild a social fabric where security is not a privilege, but a fundamental right.

It’s time for civil society, community leaders and the government to come together to put an end to this vicious cycle.

By transforming insecurity from a business into a public safety issue, Haiti can finally look forward to a more serene and prosperous future for all.
